Her 17-year tenure on the Northfield School Board has served on various other charitable foundation boards, highlighting her dedication to community service. As the vice president of the Valley Pond Townhome Association, she has been a vital member of the Board of Directors for a decade. Ruth's professional career in housing development and property management spans over 25 years and three states, showcasing her leadership and commitment to enhancing community living. Ruth has lived in Northfield, raised her family in this town, and is proud to call Northfield home.

    By opening the doors of City Hall to citizens and developers, we can empower them to drive more business and housing development. This will create shovel-ready opportunities for businesses and industry in Northfield, leading to a stronger property tax base and lessening the tax burden on every household.

Ruth believes a fresh start and bright future are essential to maintaining the neighborhood and Northfield, Minnesota, community.

On May 16, Northfield native Ruth Dahl announced she was running for mayor in Northfield. Dahl said she would officially file her candidacy with the City Clerk on Tuesday, May 21, when the office opens.

In a news release, Dahl said she is most concerned about the current administration’s out-of-control spending: “I feel it is time to step up and help the city return to a stable economic position.”

“We need to open City Hall doors to the citizens and help developers to create business and housing,” said Dahl. “We also need to work to create shovel-ready opportunities for businesses and industry to come to Northfield, creating a better property tax base for our future.”

Dahl said Northfielders cannot afford to see property taxes rise to double digits to support the current council's spending appetite.

“I believe we need to scale back our public projects. We cannot afford to start several large projects in a short time,” she said.

Born and raised in Northfield, Dahl served on the Northfield School Board for 17 years. With extensive management experience, Dahl has also served on the Board of Dentistry for Minnesota for the past eight years.

Dahl would also like to fix other city issues, such as overspending on consultant fees, bike lanes, and schools, which affect property taxpayers.

Additionally, she said bike lanes need to be more balanced. “While we all want safe biking in Northfield, spending over $5 million on the project right next to my home. I have long said we should leave our beautiful downtown alone if we need some street repair that should be carefully considered. Consider that tens of thousands visit Northfield yearly to enjoy our historic downtown.”
